On hard, the tracking is at a reasonable pace, drumming sections are kept to a minimum, and what you're left with is really fun and interesting patterns. Perfect example of a track that, IMO, is ruined by some of these tactics is You Say Run on Expert/Expert+ difficulties. They are very difficult, but once you get them they're an absolute blast to play.

Intros of greater than ~15 seconds or so where there are no notesīut I've seen MANY tracks that have taken me dozens of tries to scrape by that do none of the former. Repetitive note blocks of one direction (rip wrists) Overly flashy or distracting light/laser sequence, or making the lights go dark and spawn a bunch of bombs so you can't see them Having a track speed that does not match the tempo of the song (ex I've seen many slower songs where the blocks are coming at me light speed for no apparent reason, the blocks are overly spaced apart and it would be far better for readability if the track were slower) Long, boring drumming patterns (I'm looking at you, Freedom Dive) There are several things mappers do to artificially increase the difficulty by making the map frustrating, including but not limited to: Just searching for songs I'd like to play returns so many duds.

Definitely going the curated playlist route from now on. I like my Beat Saber when it's similar to DDR and less like, I dunno, Osu.Įdit: I ran across someone linking to a playlist for 'songs with fantastic flow' and holy cow, this is what I'm talking about! All these beatmaps that are fun to play and DONT suck. Drumming gets really old too, imo, especially when they make me drum something stupid like top corners. I'm running into a lot of songs that feel like they're off tempo, or are trying to sync to the lyrics and cause you to flail all over the place), or they're crammed so close together I can't see what's coming because they're hiding it behind other blocks or a wall or w/e. I can do E/E+ first try on a lot of stuff because a lot of the songs I play aren't crammed with an insane number of blocks and their progression feels more fluid/natural to hit. I'm happiest playing beat saber when the notes let me get into a groove where I feel like I'm dancing because the patterns flow in what feels like a natural progression.
